Silver coins provide a convenient way to own physical silver in individual units, with options ranging from widely traded 1oz bullion coins to larger 2oz and 1kg coins. We stock both new and pre-owned coins, including Best Value options for buyers focused primarily on silver content and competitive premiums.

Physical Gold is an authorised Royal Mint distributor, with free, fully insured UK delivery or secure vault storage available.

Browse our silver coins below, or read on to understand the main considerations when choosing which silver coins to buy.

Why buy silver coins?

Silver coins allow you to own physical silver in relatively small individual units. This can provide greater flexibility than larger silver bars because a holding can be divided and sold in smaller amounts.

Silver also has a considerably lower price per ounce than gold, making individual bullion coins accessible at a lower purchase price.

British legal-tender silver coins can have an additional advantage for UK investors. Coins such as Silver Britannias are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents, whereas most overseas silver coins and silver bars do not benefit from the same exemption.

For a more detailed look at the considerations involved, read our guide to investing in silver coins.

Which silver coins should I buy?

The right silver coin will depend on factors including your budget, the premium you are prepared to pay, tax treatment and whether your priority is silver content or owning a particular coin or series.

For UK investors, Silver Britannias are a natural starting point because they combine investment-grade silver with British legal-tender status and CGT exemption.

Physical Gold also stocks internationally recognised bullion coins including Silver Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, American Eagles and Austrian Philharmonics. These provide alternative ways to own investment silver but do not generally have the same UK CGT exemption as British legal-tender coins.

Buyers interested primarily in obtaining physical silver at a competitive premium may also want to consider our Best Value silver coins.

Silver Britannias

Silver Britannias are one of the UK’s best-known silver bullion coins and are produced by The Royal Mint.

The standard 1oz Silver Britannia contains one troy ounce – 31.103g – of pure silver and modern coins have a fineness of 999. The standard 1oz coin has a nominal face value of £2. (Physical Gold)

Because Britannias are British legal tender, gains made on them are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. This can make them particularly relevant to investors expecting to build a larger silver holding.

Our guide to Silver Britannias explains their characteristics in more detail.

1oz and other silver coin sizes

The 1oz silver coin is one of the most common bullion formats and is available across a wide range of British and international coins.

Physical Gold’s 1oz silver coins include Britannias, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, American Eagles and Philharmonics. (Physical Gold)

Larger and smaller coins are also available, including fractional Britannias, 2oz coins and larger-format collectable issues.

Smaller individual units can provide greater flexibility when selling, while larger coins may offer different premiums. When comparing sizes, consider both the individual purchase price and the premium relative to the amount of silver contained in the coin.

British or international silver coins?

Physical Gold stocks silver bullion coins produced by mints around the world.

British coins include Silver Britannias and Royal Mint series such as the Tudor Beasts, while international options include South African Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, American Eagles and Austrian Philharmonics.

The main distinction for UK investors is tax treatment. Qualifying British legal-tender silver coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, whereas overseas bullion coins generally are not.

International coins may nevertheless offer different premiums, designs and availability, so the appropriate choice will depend on your reasons for buying and the size of your holding.

New or Best Value silver coins?

We stock both new and pre-owned silver coins.

New coins allow buyers to choose the latest issue or a particular design, while Best Value coins are selected from available stock with the emphasis on obtaining investment silver at a competitive premium rather than choosing a specific year.

For buyers primarily interested in the underlying silver content, Best Value silver coins can therefore be worth comparing with newly minted products.

Limited-edition and collectable coins are different. Their price can reflect factors such as rarity, mintage, condition and collector demand in addition to their silver content.

Silver Coins vs Face Value

Understanding silver coin premiums

The price of a physical silver coin is normally higher than the value of the silver it contains. The difference is known as the premium.

Premiums reflect factors including minting and distribution costs, coin size, availability and market demand. Limited-edition or collectable coins may also command additional premiums that are not directly related to their silver content.

Silver coin premiums are generally higher as a percentage of metal value than gold coin premiums, making the price paid above the underlying silver value an important consideration when comparing products. Physical Gold’s existing silver investment guidance also identifies premiums as an important factor when buying physical silver.

For buyers focused primarily on bullion value, comparing standard 1oz and Best Value coins can help identify lower-premium options.

VAT and Capital Gains Tax on silver coins

The tax treatment of silver coins is an important consideration for UK buyers.

Physical silver coins purchased for delivery in the UK are generally subject to 20% VAT. This differs from qualifying investment gold, which is VAT-exempt. Investors are able to purchase silver coins without attracting VAT with our offshore solution.

Capital Gains Tax treatment depends on the coin. Qualifying British legal-tender silver coins, including Silver Britannias, are exempt from CGT for UK residents. International bullion coins such as Krugerrands, Maple Leafs and American Eagles do not generally benefit from the same exemption.

VAT and CGT should therefore both be considered when comparing different silver coins. + Read more

Silver coin prices

The underlying value of a bullion silver coin is closely linked to the amount of silver it contains and the current silver spot price.

The retail price will also include the applicable premium and VAT, so two coins containing the same quantity of silver can have different purchase prices.

You can check the underlying live silver price in pounds sterling and track changes in the silver price over time.

Delivery and secure storage

Silver coins purchased from Physical Gold can be delivered using our free, fully insured UK delivery service, with orders securely and discreetly packaged.

Alternatively, customers who would prefer not to keep their coins at home can choose specialist secure vault storage.

Storage can become particularly relevant as a silver holding grows because physical silver requires considerably more storage space than an equivalent-value holding of gold.
