Gold coins
Which gold coins can I sell?
Physical Gold buys a range of recognised investment gold coins, including British and international bullion.
If you’re selling British coins, see our dedicated pages for:
We also buy internationally recognised bullion coins, including widely traded one-ounce gold coins.
If you’re unsure whether we can purchase a particular coin, call 020 7060 9992 before sending it to us.
How much are my gold coins worth?
The value of a bullion gold coin is primarily influenced by the amount of pure gold it contains and the current gold price.
A 1oz Gold Britannia, for example, contains considerably more gold than a Full Sovereign, so their underlying bullion values are different.
The price we can offer may also reflect factors including the particular coin, its condition, market demand and whether it has value above its underlying gold content.
You can check the current live gold price before contacting us for a firm valuation.
For more information about timing a sale, read our guide to when to sell gold.
Selling Gold Sovereigns
Gold Sovereigns are among the most widely recognised British investment coins and have an established secondary market.
We buy Full, Half and other qualifying Sovereigns, including coins from different monarchs and periods. The price will depend on the individual coin, its gold content and current market conditions.
If you have Sovereigns to sell, see our dedicated Sell Gold Sovereigns page for indicative prices and further information.
Selling Gold Britannias
Physical Gold also buys Gold Britannias in a range of sizes, including 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz coins.
The underlying bullion value of each coin is closely linked to the amount of pure gold it contains and the current gold price.
See our dedicated Sell Gold Britannias page for indicative prices and information about selling your coins.
Selling international gold coins
We also buy recognised international bullion coins.
These may include coins such as Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, American Eagles and Austrian Philharmonics, subject to verification and current buying requirements.
If you have another type of international gold coin, call us before sending it and we can confirm whether we are able to provide a price.
Bullion coins and collectable coins
Not every gold coin is valued in exactly the same way.
Standard investment bullion coins are generally valued primarily according to their gold content and the current gold price.
Some older, rarer or limited-issue coins may also have numismatic or collectable value. Factors such as rarity, year, mint, condition and demand can therefore affect their value in addition to the underlying gold content.
If you believe your coins may have collectable value, let our team know when requesting a price so the individual coins can be considered appropriately.
Do I need the original packaging?
Many bullion gold coins are bought and sold without packaging.
If you have original capsules, packaging, certificates or other documentation, however, keep these with the coins and let us know when requesting a valuation – particularly for limited-edition or collectable products.
Avoid cleaning or polishing your coins before selling them, as this can affect the condition and potential collectable value of some coins.
Capital Gains Tax when selling gold coins
Tax treatment depends on the type of gold coin you own and your individual circumstances.
Qualifying British legal-tender gold coins, including Gold Sovereigns and Gold Britannias, are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.
Many overseas bullion coins do not have the same UK CGT exemption. If you are selling international coins at a gain, Capital Gains Tax may therefore need to be considered depending on your circumstances and applicable allowances.
