Buy Silver Bars

Physical Gold offers a range of investment-grade silver bars in different sizes, from smaller bars for those starting to buy physical silver to larger bars for investors seeking a lower premium per gram. + Read more

Silver bars provide a straightforward way to own physical silver and can offer lower premiums per gram than many silver coins, particularly at larger sizes. When choosing a silver bar, important considerations include the size and weight of the bar, the premium above the silver price, VAT and how you intend to store your silver.

Why buy silver bars?

Silver bars allow you to buy physical silver in a simple bullion format, with their underlying value primarily determined by the quantity of silver they contain and the prevailing silver price.

Bars are available in a range of weights, making them suitable for different budgets. Larger silver bars will generally have a lower premium per gram than smaller bars or individual silver coins because manufacturing costs are spread across a greater quantity of metal.

The trade-off is flexibility. Several smaller bars can be sold individually, whereas selling a larger bar means selling a greater proportion of your silver holding at once.

If you are considering other forms of physical silver, compare our silver coins or explore our wider range of silver bullion.

Which size silver bar should I buy?

The right silver bar size will depend on your budget and the balance you want between lower premiums and flexibility.

Smaller bars have a lower individual purchase price and allow a holding to be divided into smaller units. Larger bars generally provide a lower premium per gram but require more capital for each individual purchase and sale.

Physical Gold stocks silver bars in a range of sizes, including 1oz, 100g, 500g, 1kg and 5kg bars, subject to availability. (Physical Gold)

When comparing silver bars, consider:

  • the total price of the bar;
  • the amount of pure silver it contains;
  • the premium above the underlying silver value;
  • VAT;
  • how easily you want to divide your holding when selling; and
  • the amount of physical storage space required.

For a larger investment, a combination of bar sizes may provide a balance between cost per gram and flexibility.

Silver bars or silver coins?

Both silver bars and silver coins provide direct ownership of physical silver, but they have different characteristics.

Silver bars will generally offer a lower premium per gram, particularly at larger sizes, making them worth considering for buyers whose priority is acquiring a greater quantity of silver.

Silver coins are available in smaller individual units and can provide greater flexibility when selling. Qualifying British legal-tender coins such as Silver Britannias also benefit from Capital Gains Tax exemption for UK residents.

Silver bars do not benefit from this CGT exemption, so tax treatment may become an important consideration for larger holdings.

New or best value silver bars?

Physical Gold stocks both new and Best Value silver bars, depending on availability.

New bars allow buyers to choose a particular product or refiner. Best Value bars place greater emphasis on obtaining investment-grade silver at a competitive premium rather than choosing a particular brand, design or age.

For investors primarily interested in the underlying silver content, Best Value silver bars can therefore be worth comparing with newly produced bars.

Pre-owned bullion may show signs of handling or age, but this does not change the quantity of silver contained in the bar.

Understanding silver bar premiums

The price of a physical silver bar is normally higher than the underlying value of the silver it contains. The difference between the metal value and the price of the bar is known as the premium.

Premiums reflect costs including refining, manufacturing and distribution, as well as product availability and market demand.

Larger bars generally have lower premiums per gram than smaller bars because the manufacturing cost represents a smaller proportion of the overall value.

When comparing bars, looking at the price per gram or ounce of silver can therefore provide a more useful comparison than looking only at the total price.

VAT on silver bars

Tax is an important consideration when buying physical silver in the UK.

Silver bars purchased for delivery in the UK are generally subject to 20% VAT. This differs from qualifying investment gold, which is VAT-exempt.

However, Physical Gold also offers a VAT-free silver bar solution for investors who do not require UK delivery.

Qualifying silver bars are purchased for offshore storage and held in a bonded Brinks vault in Zurich, Switzerland. The silver is held on a fully allocated and segregated basis, with the investor retaining legal ownership of the metal. No UK VAT is charged while the silver remains within this arrangement. (Physical Gold)

This can reduce the initial cost of acquiring physical silver compared with purchasing the same quantity for delivery in the UK.

The VAT-free silver cannot be delivered into the UK while retaining its VAT-free status. If physical delivery into the UK is subsequently required, VAT becomes applicable. (Physical Gold)

Find out more about how the arrangement works and view the available VAT-free silver bars.

Capital Gains Tax on silver bars

Silver bars are potentially subject to Capital Gains Tax when sold at a gain, depending on your individual circumstances and the applicable allowances.

This differs from qualifying British legal-tender silver coins, such as Silver Britannias, which are exempt from CGT for UK residents.

For larger holdings, the different tax treatment of silver bars and British silver coins may therefore be worth considering when deciding how to structure your physical silver purchases. + Read more

Silver bar prices

The underlying value of a silver bar is determined primarily by its weight and the current silver price.

For silver purchased for UK delivery, the retail price will also reflect the applicable premium and VAT. This means the amount paid for a physical silver bar will normally be higher than the spot value of the silver it contains.

Investors who do not require UK delivery can also consider our VAT-free silver bars, where qualifying silver is purchased for bonded storage in Zurich without the initial 20% UK VAT charge. (Physical Gold)

You can view the live silver price in pounds sterling and track how the price of silver has changed over time.

When comparing bars, consider the spot value of the silver alongside the premium, VAT treatment and any applicable storage costs to understand the overall cost of ownership.

Storing silver bars

Storage deserves particular consideration when buying silver bars because silver takes up considerably more physical space than the equivalent monetary value of gold.

For silver purchased in the UK, customers can choose secure vault storage rather than keeping their bullion at home. Physical Gold’s UK silver storage is fully allocated and segregated. (Physical Gold)

Physical Gold also offers a separate VAT-free silver bar solution, where qualifying silver bars are held on a fully allocated and segregated basis at Brinks in Zurich. This allows investors to own physical silver without taking UK delivery and incurring UK VAT while the metal remains within the bonded storage arrangement. (Physical Gold)

For more information about the different options, see our delivery and secure storage page.

Delivery of silver bars

Silver bars purchased for UK delivery are securely and discreetly packaged and sent using Physical Gold’s fully insured UK delivery service.

Larger silver purchases can be considerably heavier and bulkier than equivalent-value gold purchases, so delivery and storage requirements are worth considering when deciding how much physical silver to buy.

VAT-free silver held in Zurich is a storage-only product and cannot be delivered into the UK without VAT becoming applicable. (Physical Gold)

Full information about delivery, insurance and storage is available on our delivery and storage page.
