The 2027 1/10oz Gold Britannia offers one of the most accessible ways to own a new Gold Britannia, containing one-tenth of a troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold.

This year’s coin is particularly significant. 2027 marks the 40th anniversary of the Gold Britannia, first introduced in 1987. To celebrate, The Royal Mint has given the 2027 gold bullion range a special ‘40’ wave privy mark and anniversary background texture.

Weighing just 3.14g and measuring 16.50mm in diameter, the 1/10oz edition packs the heritage, security and UK tax advantages of the Britannia into the smallest gold coin in the 2027 bullion range.

Start investing in gold with a smaller coin

Buying physical gold doesn’t have to mean purchasing a full ounce at a time.

The 1/10oz Gold Britannia provides a lower-cost entry point into physical gold than the larger Britannia denominations. This makes it particularly suitable for investors who want to start with a smaller purchase or gradually accumulate gold over time.

Buying smaller quantities regularly can also allow investors to spread purchases across different gold prices rather than committing a larger sum at a single point in the market.

For established investors, tenth-ounce coins can complement larger bullion coins by adding smaller, highly divisible units to a physical gold portfolio.

40 years of the Gold Britannia

Britannia has appeared on British coins for centuries, but the modern Gold Britannia bullion coin was introduced in 1987.

Sculptor Philip Nathan created the interpretation of Britannia that has defined the series ever since. His design depicts Britannia standing against the elements, carrying a shield for protection, an olive branch symbolising peace and her unmistakable trident representing Britain’s connection with the sea.

For the 40th anniversary in 2027, The Royal Mint has introduced commemorative details across its gold Britannia bullion coins. These include the special ‘40’ wave privy mark and a background texture showcasing the anniversary number.

The obverse bears Martin Jennings’ official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

Small coin, sophisticated security

The compact size of the 1/10oz Britannia doesn’t mean compromising on security.

The 2027 coin incorporates four intricate security features designed to reduce the risk of counterfeiting and make authentication easier. The features form part of the coin’s detailed design, combining practical security with the visual characteristics of the modern Britannia range.

This is particularly valuable for a bullion coin designed to be bought, held and ultimately sold as an investment.

Why buy the 2027 1/10oz Gold Britannia?

The smallest gold coin in the 2027 Britannia bullion range offers several advantages:

  • One-tenth of a troy ounce of fine gold – struck in 999.9 gold.
  • Lower entry price – a more accessible way to buy a new Gold Britannia.
  • Ideal for regular gold buying – smaller individual purchases can help investors build a holding gradually.
  • Highly divisible – useful for investors who want the option to sell their gold in smaller quantities.
  • 40th anniversary issue – featuring the special ‘40’ wave privy mark and anniversary background texture.
  • CGT exempt – Britannias are UK legal-tender coins and exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK individual taxpayers.
  • VAT free – qualifying investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK.
  • Four security features – incorporated to assist authentication and reduce the risk of counterfeiting.

Is it better to buy 1/10oz or larger gold coins?

The main trade-off with fractional gold is between flexibility and cost efficiency.

Smaller coins such as the 1/10oz Britannia typically command a higher premium per gram than larger bullion coins. If your sole objective is to acquire the maximum amount of gold for your money, a 1oz Gold Britannia or lower-premium pre-owned coin may offer better value.

However, the 1/10oz coin provides something larger denominations cannot offer to the same degree – divisibility. Ten individual 1/10oz coins give an investor considerably more flexibility over how much of their holding they sell at any one time than a single one-ounce coin.

The denomination can therefore work particularly well alongside larger coins as part of a mixed physical gold portfolio.
