2027 Half Sovereign Coin

The 2027 Gold Half Sovereign Coin combines over two centuries of British coin-making heritage with the appeal of traditional yellow gold. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22-carat gold, this latest edition features Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the dragon design, alongside the official portrait of King Charles III.

Containing approximately 3.66g of pure gold, the 2027 Half Sovereign offers a more affordable way to own one of Britain’s best-known gold coins. Its smaller size makes it particularly appealing to investors looking to build their gold holdings gradually or purchase gold in manageable denominations.

As UK legal tender, the coin is exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for UK investors, while its investment-grade gold content also qualifies for VAT exemption.

Why buy the 2027 Gold Half Sovereign?

  • Traditional yellow gold – struck in the classic 22-carat yellow-gold alloy, continuing the return to tradition introduced in 2026.
  • CGT-free investment – UK legal tender status means gains are exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax.
  • VAT-free gold – qualifying investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK.
  • Affordable denomination – contains half the gold of a full Sovereign, offering a lower entry price.
  • Flexible ownership – smaller coins allow investors to sell part of their holdings without disposing of larger gold coins.
  • Iconic British design – features the celebrated St George and the dragon reverse and King Charles III obverse.
  • Enhanced security – incorporates micro-text, a latent image and additional design features to help protect against counterfeiting.

The 2027 Half Sovereign design

A return to traditional yellow gold

Following the return of yellow gold to the Sovereign range in 2026, the 2027 Gold Half Sovereign continues this traditional appearance.

Earlier modern Sovereigns were distinguished by their warmer, rose-gold tone. The latest yellow-gold alloy restores the familiar golden colour associated with historic Sovereigns, while maintaining the coin’s established 22-carat purity.

The iconic St George and the dragon

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous depiction of St George on horseback defeating the dragon – a design first introduced to Sovereign coinage in 1817.

The 2027 edition incorporates additional micro-text security detailing into this historic design, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern anti-counterfeiting technology.

King Charles III obverse

The obverse bears Martin Jennings’ official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

The design also incorporates advanced security features, including a latent image beneath the King’s portrait and a half-tone pattern, helping distinguish genuine 2027 bullion coins.

Is the 2027 Gold Half Sovereign a good investment?

The 2027 Half Sovereign can be an attractive option for investors who want to own physical gold without committing to the cost of a full Sovereign or larger bullion coin.

Each coin contains approximately 0.1177 troy ounces of pure gold, giving investors direct exposure to the gold price in a compact, internationally recognised format.

Its smaller denomination also provides flexibility. Rather than selling an entire 1oz gold coin or several full Sovereigns, investors can sell individual Half Sovereigns when they need to release a smaller amount of capital.

However, smaller gold coins typically carry a higher percentage premium over the gold spot price than larger bullion coins. Investors focused primarily on obtaining the greatest possible gold weight for their money may therefore prefer to compare Half Sovereigns with Best Value Gold Sovereigns or Best Value Gold Coins.
