2027 Gold Sovereign Coin
The 2027 Gold Sovereign continues a remarkable return to tradition for one of Britain’s most recognisable gold coins.
Following the end of the Sovereign’s rose gold era in 2025, The Royal Mint returned to traditional yellow gold in 2026. The 2027 edition is therefore only the second Sovereign struck in traditional yellow gold this century.
On the reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the Dragon returns once again – a design that has become synonymous with the Sovereign over more than two centuries.
But while the 2027 Sovereign celebrates its heritage, this year’s coin also introduces an important modern development. Both sides of the coin incorporate unique security features, making the 2027 bullion Sovereign the most secure yet.
500 years of 22-carat gold
The Sovereign’s distinctive gold standard has a history stretching back half a millennium.
In 1526, Henry VIII instructed Cardinal Wolsey, then Lord Chancellor, to reform the values of English coins. The changes marked the introduction of 22-carat gold, establishing a standard that remains in use for the Sovereign 500 years later.
The 2027 Sovereign celebrates that extraordinary continuity by combining the traditional 22-carat specification with its recently restored yellow-gold appearance.
Enhanced security for the 2027 Sovereign
The 2027 coin introduces sophisticated security details while retaining the traditional appearance that makes the Sovereign so instantly recognisable.
Look closely at Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon reverse and you’ll find micro-text engraving forming the inscription:
‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’
This is the motto of the Order of the Garter.
The obverse features the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, accompanied by a new latent-image security feature. Depending on the viewing angle, this alternates between the Tudor Crown, The King’s chosen royal cypher and the Tudor Rose, a symbol associated with Henry VII.
A half-tone pattern on the obverse provides a further layer of protection against counterfeiting.
Together, these features make the 2027 Sovereign an intriguing combination of 500 years of minting tradition and modern coin security technology.
Why buy a 2027 Gold Sovereign?
For UK investors, Sovereigns combine several characteristics that are difficult to find in a single physical gold investment.
As qualifying investment gold, Gold Sovereigns are VAT-free. Because Sovereigns are also British legal tender, they are exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
Their smaller size can also offer greater flexibility than larger 1oz bullion coins. Rather than having to sell a full ounce of gold when you need to release part of an investment, individual Sovereigns can be sold separately.
The 2027 edition has some additional points of interest:
- Only the second yellow-gold Sovereign of the century
- Traditional 22-carat gold specification
- Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the Dragon reverse
- Official King Charles III coinage portrait
- New micro-text, latent image and half-tone security features
- VAT-free investment gold
- CGT-free for UK investors
- Globally recognised British gold coin
Exceptional precision
The Sovereign isn’t simply one of the world’s most established gold coins – it is also produced to exceptionally exacting specifications.
The Royal Mint guarantees the Sovereign’s weight to five decimal places, describing it as the most tightly specified coin in the world.
For investors, this combination of precisely controlled gold content, international recognition and more than two centuries of Sovereign heritage has helped make the coin a mainstay of the British physical gold market.
