The 2027 1/4oz Gold Britannia combines a quarter of a troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold with a special design celebrating 40 years of the Gold Britannia.

Introduced in 1987, the Gold Britannia has become one of Britain’s best-known bullion coins. For its 40th anniversary, The Royal Mint has updated the 2027 gold range with a distinctive ‘40’ wave privy mark and anniversary background texture, making this a particularly significant year for the series.

At 7.81g, the quarter-ounce edition offers a more accessible way to own the 2027 Britannia, while retaining the tax advantages, security features and internationally recognised design of the larger coins.

A flexible way to invest in physical gold

You don’t need to buy gold by the ounce.

Fractional coins such as the 1/4oz Gold Britannia allow investors to build their physical gold holdings in smaller increments. This can make them particularly useful for regular purchases, smaller investment budgets or portfolios where flexibility is important.

Holding gold across several smaller coins also provides more options when the time comes to sell. Rather than liquidating a full ounce of gold, investors can choose to sell individual fractional coins while retaining the rest of their holding.

A special Britannia for 2027

The 2027 Britannia celebrates four decades since Philip Nathan’s interpretation of Britannia first appeared on the new British bullion coin in 1987.

His design presents Britannia standing confidently beside the sea, carrying the symbols that have become synonymous with the coin: a shield for protection, an olive branch for peace and a trident representing her maritime heritage.

For the anniversary year, The Royal Mint has incorporated a ‘40’ wave privy mark and a background texture featuring the anniversary number.

The obverse features the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings.

Four intricate security features

Despite its smaller 22mm diameter, the 2027 1/4oz Britannia incorporates the same sophisticated approach to security found across the modern Britannia bullion range.

Four intricate security features have been incorporated into the design to help reduce the risk of counterfeiting and make the coin easier to authenticate.

These details combine security with the craftsmanship for which the Britannia series has become known.

Why choose the 2027 1/4oz Gold Britannia?

The quarter-ounce Britannia can be particularly attractive for investors seeking a balance between affordability and meaningful gold content:

  • 1/4 troy ounce of fine gold – struck in 999.9 gold.
  • Accessible fractional size – buy physical gold without the cost of a full or half-ounce coin.
  • Ideal for incremental investing – useful for investors building their holdings through regular purchases.
  • Greater flexibility when selling – smaller units allow you to liquidate part of a holding rather than an entire ounce.
  • 40th anniversary issue – distinguished by the special ‘40’ wave privy mark and anniversary background texture.
  • CGT exempt – Britannia coins are UK legal tender and exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK individual taxpayers.
  • VAT free – qualifying investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK.
  • Four security features – designed to support authentication and reduce the risk of counterfeiting.

Is a 1/4oz Gold Britannia a good investment size?

There is no single best Britannia size – the right denomination depends on how you intend to build and eventually sell your gold holding.

The 1oz Gold Britannia will typically offer a lower premium per gram than smaller fractional coins, making it attractive when maximising gold content for your money is the priority.

The 1/4oz Britannia, however, offers greater flexibility and a considerably lower purchase price per coin. This can make it useful for investors who prefer to buy gold little and often, or who want their portfolio divided into smaller, more easily tradable units.

Investors can also combine different Britannia denominations, using larger coins for value and fractional coins for flexibility.
