Silver Royal Arms 2020
These are brand new 1oz Silver Bullion coins issued by The Royal Mint. Each coin contains 1oz of silver to a fineness of 999.0 and comes in a plastic capsule. Larger orders come in foil packs of 20 and multiples of 100 are packed into boxes.
The Royal Arms 2020 Silver coin features a face value of £1, qualifying the coin as legal tender, but crucially for investors, deems any profit made on the coin to be free from Capital Gains Tax. The coin is the 3rd year of issue after 2018’s successful launch and is also minted in a 1oz gold version.
Royal Arms Design
The back of the coin features the Royal Arms design by Timothy Noad, actually a refreshed version of the image used on the reverse of the 2015 Gold £1 coin. The Royal Coat of Arms are the official coat of arms of the British Monarch and are will be recognisable to us all as they’re used on regular currency coinage, passports and official documents. The Arms represent the history and strength of the UK monarchy.
The central shield image is split into four, with each quarter representing UK nations. The first and third quarters depict the three passant guardant lions of England, the second Scotland’s rampant lion and the third reflects the harp of Ireland. A crowned lion and chained Unicorn flank the shield with the wording “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE” ribboned below – latin for ‘Shame on he who thinks evil on it’.
The year of issue is displayed at the top with the weight, precious metal and fineness confirmed below.
The obverse of the coin displays the now familiar fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by renowned designer Jody Clark.
Our Expert Opinion
This is another shrewd marketing move by the Royal Mint. With all the talk about Brexit, there is nothing more familiar to bring us together in the UK than the Royal Coat of Arms – an image featured on all our passports.
We expect this coin to follow on from last year’s popularity as the coin appeals to both UK investors with the coin being tax free, and also overseas collectors who are drawn to the intricate British design.
