Trafalgar Square 1oz Silver coin

These are silver coins produced by The Royal Mint as part of an exciting series of coins celebrating Britain’s landmarks. The Silver Trafalgar Landmark coin is the third in the series and follows the Tower Bridge silver coin and the Big Ben 1oz Landmark of Britan coin. Each coin is minted to the highest purity of silver at 999.9 fineness and contains exactly one troy ounce of silver. These silver bullion coins have a face value of £2 and are therefore free from Capital gains Tax due to being legal tender. Coins are packaged in plastic capsules, foiled into tubes of 20 and boxes of 100. There is a mintage limit of 50,000 coins.

Battle of Trafalgar

The coin celebrates Trafalgar Sqaure in the centre of London, providing a break from major surrounding roads and a home to the National Gallery. These days, the square is just as famous for hosting New Year’s Eve frolicking as the 52m high Nelson’s column. A statue Of Admiral Nelson himself is proudly positioned atop the column to mark Britain’s victory over the French and Spanish at the key Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Coin obverse

The coin features the well-recognised 5th portrait of Queen Elizabeth by Jody Clark on the front, with the landmark design on its rear. Nelson’s column is displayed on the right-hand side, while a huge Lion impressively sits on the left, representing the four carved Landseer Lions which surround the column in central London.

Writing around the outside of the coin reverse confirms the landmark name, year of issue, weight, purity and metal.

Our expert opinion

Like other coins from the Royal Mint, the Landmarks of Britain range bridges the gap between silver investment and silver coin collectors. With a face value, the coin is CGT exempt so any profits are tax free. The limited mintage size and being part of a set, means demand will come from collectors too, but also benefit investors as values rise with restricted supply.
