2026 Gold Sovereign Coin
Marking a return to tradition, the 2026 Gold Sovereign reintroduces the classic yellow gold alloy that has defined Britain’s most iconic coin for centuries. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22 carat gold, this year’s Sovereign celebrates half a millennium of minting excellence – tracing its heritage back to Henry VIII’s 1526 decree that established 22 carat gold as the standard for The Sovereign.
Following the end of the rose gold era in 2025, the 2026 issue combines timeless beauty with cutting-edge security features, making it both a trusted investment and a collector’s delight.
Coin design and details
The 2026 Gold Sovereign contains 7.988 grams of 22 carat gold, maintaining the precise weight and purity that have made it the world’s most tightly specified coin. Its weight is guaranteed to five decimal places – a testament to the accuracy and reliability that define every Sovereign.
The obverse features His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings, enhanced this year with a new latent image beneath the portrait. Depending on the angle, this innovative security feature alternates between the Tudor Crown, The King’s royal cypher, and the Tudor Rose, paying homage to the Sovereign’s Tudor origins.
The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic depiction of St George slaying the dragon, now surrounded by micro-text engraving that reads “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE” – the motto of the Order of the Garter. This intricate detail, alongside a subtle half-tone background pattern, further strengthens protection against counterfeiting.
