2026 Half Sovereign Coin

The 2026 Half Sovereign marks a return to classic British craftsmanship, struck once again in the rich yellow gold alloy that defined the coin’s earliest issues. Minted by The Royal Mint in 22 carat gold, this year’s release continues a 500-year legacy of precision and prestige that began in 1526, when Henry VIII established 22 carat gold as the standard for The Sovereign’s striking alloy.

Following the conclusion of the rose-gold era in 2025, the 2026 Half Sovereign restores the traditional golden hue that collectors and investors have long admired – blending historic design with the most advanced security features ever applied to the series.

Coin design and details

Containing 3.994 grams of 22 carat gold, the 2026 Half Sovereign upholds the same meticulous standards as its full-sized counterpart, with weight accuracy guaranteed to five decimal places.

The obverse showcases His Majesty King Charles III, sculpted by Martin Jennings, enhanced by a new latent image beneath the portrait. This modern security innovation reveals either the Tudor Crown, King Charles III’s royal cypher, or the Tudor Rose depending on how light catches the surface – a tribute to the Sovereign’s Tudor beginnings.

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless depiction of St George defeating the dragon, encircled by micro-text engraving bearing the Order of the Garter’s motto, “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE.” A fine half-tone pattern provides an additional anti-counterfeiting safeguard, making this the most secure Half Sovereign ever produced.
