Celebrate three decades of one of Britain’s best-known silver bullion coins with the 2027 1oz Silver Britannia.

The year 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of the Silver Britannia, first introduced in 1997. To commemorate the milestone, The Royal Mint has created a distinctive anniversary edition featuring a special ‘30’ wave privy mark and a new background texture incorporating the anniversary number.

Struck in 999 fine silver and containing one troy ounce of silver, the 2027 edition combines Philip Nathan’s celebrated Britannia design with four advanced security features and the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

For investors looking to add physical silver to their portfolio, this special anniversary Britannia offers an accessible, internationally recognised British bullion coin with the added distinction of a milestone year.

Celebrating 30 years of the Silver Britannia

The Silver Britannia was introduced in 1997, ten years after the launch of its gold counterpart.

At its heart is sculptor Philip Nathan’s depiction of Britannia, a design originally created for the Britannia bullion series and now instantly associated with British precious-metal coins.

Britannia stands resolutely with her trident, shield and olive branch. Each carries its own meaning – the shield symbolises protection, the olive branch represents peace, while the trident reflects Britain’s historic connection with the sea.

For 2027, The Royal Mint has added a ‘30’ wave privy mark and an anniversary background texture to celebrate 30 years of the Silver Britannia.

The result is a distinctive dated issue that sets the 2027 coin apart from standard Silver Britannias.

An accessible way to own physical silver

Silver offers investors a considerably lower entry point into physical precious metals than gold.

At 31.21g, the 2027 Silver Britannia contains one troy ounce of silver, making it straightforward to build a holding incrementally. Investors can purchase individual coins over time or build larger quantities depending on their budget and investment strategy.

The 1oz format is also widely recognised within the international bullion market, which can help when the time comes to value or sell a holding.

Silver Britannias are British legal-tender coins and therefore have an additional advantage for UK investors – profits made by UK individual taxpayers are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

Four advanced security features

The modern Silver Britannia incorporates four intricate security features, designed to make counterfeiting more difficult and authentication easier.

These features are incorporated directly into the coin’s design rather than added as separate elements, combining security with the detailed finish of Philip Nathan’s Britannia.

This additional protection is particularly valuable for bullion investors, helping to make genuine Britannias easier to recognise when buying and selling on the secondary market.

Why buy the 2027 1oz Silver Britannia?

The 2027 edition combines the established investment credentials of the Silver Britannia with a design created specifically for its anniversary year.

  • One troy ounce of silver – struck in 999 fine silver.
  • 30th anniversary edition – celebrating three decades since the Silver Britannia was introduced in 1997.
  • Special ‘30’ wave privy mark – unique to the 2027 silver bullion range.
  • Anniversary background texture – incorporating the anniversary number into the coin’s design.
  • Accessible precious-metal investment – silver provides a lower entry price than gold.
  • CGT exempt – Silver Britannias are UK legal tender and exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK individual taxpayers.
  • Four security features – designed to reduce counterfeiting risk and facilitate authentication.
  • Recognisable British bullion coin – produced by The Royal Mint and featuring Philip Nathan’s iconic Britannia.

Is the 1oz Silver Britannia a good investment coin?

For UK investors, the Silver Britannia has a particularly useful combination of affordability, recognition and tax efficiency.

Its lower price compared with gold makes it easier to accumulate multiple coins and gradually increase a physical precious-metals holding. As UK legal tender, Britannias also offer a significant advantage over many foreign silver bullion coins because gains are exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax for individual taxpayers.

There is, however, an important distinction between silver and gold. Physical silver purchased for UK delivery is normally subject to VAT, whereas qualifying investment gold is VAT exempt.

For investors purchasing larger quantities of silver, storage-based options can therefore be worth considering where eligible VAT treatment differs from taking physical delivery.

The 2027 Britannia anniversary range

2027 is a particularly significant year for the wider Britannia bullion family.

While the Gold Britannia celebrates its 40th anniversary, the Silver Britannia reaches its 30th anniversary. The Royal Mint has distinguished the two ranges with different wave privy marks – ‘40’ on the gold coins and ‘30’ on the silver coins.

For investors who hold both metals, the 2027 range therefore provides an opportunity to own Britannias marking two important milestones in the history of British bullion.
