How much are my silver bars worth?

The underlying value of a silver bar is primarily determined by its weight, purity and the current silver price.

The price a dealer can pay for physical silver will not necessarily be identical to its spot value. The final price can also reflect factors including the bar, refiner, market demand and the costs associated with verifying and reselling physical bullion.

You can check the underlying live silver price before contacting us for a firm price.

Which silver bars can I sell?

Physical Gold buys investment-grade silver bars across a range of sizes and from recognised bullion refiners.

You can contact us about silver bars purchased from Physical Gold as well as qualifying bullion purchased elsewhere. All bars are subject to verification before a transaction is completed.

If you’re unsure whether we can purchase your particular silver bar, call 020 7060 9992 before sending it to us.

Does VAT affect selling my silver bars?

Silver bars purchased for delivery in the UK are generally subject to VAT at the time of purchase. However, you do not add VAT to the price when selling your personal silver bars back to a bullion dealer unless your own circumstances require you to account for VAT.

This means the amount originally paid for a silver bar, including VAT, should not be confused with its current bullion resale value.

For investors considering buying silver again, Physical Gold also offers VAT-free silver bars held in bonded storage in Zurich. The structure enables qualifying silver to be purchased without UK VAT while it remains within the bonded storage arrangement.

Selling VAT-free silver held in Zurich

If you own VAT-free silver bars through Physical Gold’s bonded storage solution in Zurich, the selling process is different because the bullion does not need to be brought into the UK.

The silver is already held within the bonded storage arrangement, so a sale can be arranged without needing to transport the bars back to ourselves.

Complete the Silver Sale Instruction at the bottom of this page and email it to info@physicalgold.com. Then, contact Physical Gold to lock in a live price for your silver held within the Zurich facility.

New, pre-owned and Best Value silver bars

The resale value of an investment silver bar is generally driven primarily by its silver content rather than whether you originally bought it new or as a Best Value product.

Bars still need to be verified, and factors including the refiner, condition and prevailing demand can influence the price a dealer is able to offer.

If you have original packaging, certificates or documentation, retain these and let us know about them when requesting a price.

Do I need the original packaging or certificate?

Some investment silver bars are supplied in original packaging or with certificates, while others are not.

If you still have the original packaging or documentation, keep it with the bar when selling.

If packaging or documentation is missing, contact our team before sending your silver. We can explain whether we are able to purchase the bar and what verification may be required.

Selling silver bars stored with Physical Gold

If your silver bars are already held in secure storage through Physical Gold, there is no need to arrange for them to be delivered back to us before selling.

Contact our team to obtain a live price and initiate the sale. The appropriate selling instructions can then be completed without you having to transport the physical bullion yourself.

This applies particularly to VAT-free silver held in Zurich, where retaining the silver within the bonded arrangement avoids the need to import the bullion into the UK before selling it.

For more information about our storage arrangements, see delivery and secure storage.

Capital Gains Tax when selling silver bars

Unlike qualifying British legal-tender silver coins, silver bars are not exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

If you sell silver bars at a gain, CGT may therefore need to be considered depending on your individual circumstances and the applicable allowances. This doesn’t impact the price or logistics of your sale to us. However, you may have to report your profit on your next tax return.

This differs from qualifying British legal-tender coins such as Silver Britannias, which are exempt from CGT for UK residents.

Tax rules and individual circumstances vary, so professional tax advice may be appropriate where a significant gain has been made.

Our Silver Buyback Guarantee

Physical Gold offers a Buyback Guarantee on qualifying silver bullion originally purchased from us.

This means customers who have purchased qualifying silver bars from Physical Gold can return to us when they decide to sell.

The price offered will depend on the silver price, the particular bullion and prevailing market conditions at the time of sale.

If you’re considering purchasing silver bars, browse our range of silver bars, including our VAT-free silver bars held in Zurich.

Sending your silver bars to us

Please do not send your silver before obtaining and agreeing a live price and agreeing the correct delivery address.

Once the sale has been confirmed, we’ll provide instructions explaining how your bullion should be sent or brought to us.

Silver is considerably heavier and bulkier than an equivalent-value holding of gold, so it is particularly important to follow the agreed packaging, insurance and delivery instructions when sending larger bars or quantities.

Once received, the bars will be checked and verified before payment is made.

Selling part of your silver holding

You don’t necessarily need to sell your entire silver holding at once.

If you own several individual bars, you can choose how many you wish to sell. Holding silver across several bars can therefore provide greater flexibility than holding the same quantity in a single larger bar.

Contact us for indicative valuations if you want to understand the current value of different parts of your holding before deciding how much to sell.
