1oz Silver Britannia 20th Anniversary Coin

This special edition 20th anniversary silver Britannia features a high security radial design and a unique trident ’20’ mint mark. The 1oz Silver Britannia bullion coin was 20 years old in 2017. To mark this event, The Royal Mint issued a 20th anniversary coin.

There is an updated version of the original design by Phillip Nathan on the reverse, along with an anniversary mark.

The obverse contains the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of fine silver and has a face value of £2.

Coin History and Mintage

Since first being released in 1997, the Silver Britannia has proven to be one of the most popular coins for investors and collectors alike. Originally, they contained 958/1000 parts silver until 2013, when they increased fineness to 999.0 thereafter.

This coin has a limited mintage of 120,000 so demand will outstrip supply.

The silver bullion coin lagged behind its gold counterpart, which celebrated its 30th year of production in 2017. The Britannia was originally conceived as a rival to the ever-popular Krugerrand coin which was the first bullion coin marketed with 1oz of pure gold content. With the South African coin dominating the market for decades, other Mints around the world attempted to replicate its winning formula. The Britannia represented the UK’s attempt, while other 1oz gold coins included the Maple Leaf, Australian Nugget and American Eagle. All of which have now spawned 1oz silver coin versions.

Our Expert Opinion

As an investment coin, the Silver Britannia special edition proves to be a tax efficient choice for UK silver investors. It’s legal tender status deeming as Capital Gains Tax free. Due to its limited supply, the value of the coin is expected to rise quicker than standard silver bullion Britannias.  If low purchase cost is your main motivation, then the regular mass-produced silver Britannia provides better initial value, albeit upside may be slower.

For those interested in collectors silver coins, the 20th anniversary Britannia is an excellent choice. Other coins to consider would be the popular UK Queen’s Beasts series of coins, and the Royal Mint silver Lunar series. Both are part of a collection of coins releases at regular intervals.
