 History of Mickey Mouse

First imagined by Walt Disney in 1928, Mickey Mouse has appealed to a wide range of fans across the ages. His cheeky demeanor has proved accessible and appealing for fans of cartoons and imagination. Mickey’s rise to fame coincided with great leaps forward being made in the world of animation. His film debut came in the Disney production Steamboat Willie, one of the first films to feature sound. His trademark costume of yellow shoes, red shorts and white gloves were adorned in over 130 films in total.

Widespread fame

Mickey Mouse has also featured in thousands of comics, shows and games, providing the central character to a developing group of creations including his friends Donald Duck & Goofy, his girlfriend Minnie and faithful dog Pluto.   Even today, children are able to meet Mickey in person at one of the famous Disney parks around the world.

2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the character which was celebrated in numerous locations around the world

Coin design

The reverse of this collectible silver coin features a frosted ’90’ to commemorate the long existence of its central character. Mickey, in his more original guise, stands in the centre of the zero. The weight, purity and metal are confirmed at the bottom of the coin along with the Disney copyright mark.

The front of the coin features the Sir Ian Rank-Broadley image of HM Queen Elizabeth II on a matt background.
